MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Southern Luzon should prepare for cloudy skies with widespread rain, the state weather bureau said Wednesday, September 5, even as a low pressure area (LPA) in the Philippines has dissipated.

The rain in Southern Luzon may trigger flash floods and landslides, added the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 5 am bulletin Wednesday.

In a phone interview with Rappler, PAGASA forecaster Jori Loiz quelled fears of a storm.

The LPA has dissipated as of 11 am on Wednesday.

The southwest monsoon is likewise in the “weakening stage,” he said. Loiz, however, did not discount the possibility that the monsoon could cause rain in parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms, according to PAGASA.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A new low pressure area (LPA) has entered the Philippines and is expected to bring rain in Mindanao, the state weather bureau said Saturday, September 1.

Estimated at 910 kilometers east of Visayas, the LPA could bring moderate to heavy rain, and thunderstorms in Mindanao, particularly over Misamis Oriental and the provinces of Agusan, Surigao, and Davao. The LPA can bring rain of 5 to 10 millimeters per hour, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 11 a.m. weather advisory.

The LPA can trigger flash floods and landslides in affected areas, the state weather bureau said.

But it has little chance of becoming a storm in the next 24 hours, PAGASA forecaster Jun Galang told Rappler.

If it becomes a storm within the Philippines, PAGASA will name it Karen.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is affecting northern and central Luzon. The whole Philippines will thus experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms, PAGASA said. It will become cloudy with widespread rain over eastern and southern Mindanao, triggering flash floods and landslides.

MANILA, Philippines – The low pressure area (LPA) near Mindanao may enter the Philippines on Saturday afternoon, September 1, a state weather forecaster told Rappler.

But the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) still cannot identify the areas that the weather disturbance could affect, said weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio.

PAGASA has spotted the LPA at 1,040 kilometers east of northern Mindanao, the state weather bureau said in its latest weather bulletin as of 5 a.m.
